American Express Platinum UK: Is It Worth It for Travellers?

If you travel regularly, you may have heard of the American Express Platinum Card. We’ve used several different credit cards over the years, but for us, this is the one that offers the most useful travel benefits.

From airport lounge access and travel insurance to hotel benefits and Membership Rewards points, there are quite a few perks included with the card.

And if you're thinking of signing up, make sure you check the current welcome offer before applying, as the number of points offered can change.

If you decide to apply for the American Express Platinum Card through this link, you can currently receive 100,000 Membership Rewards points:.

Why we love the American Express Platinum for travel

The main reason we love the Platinum Card is that so many of the benefits are particularly useful when you travel.

Here are some of our favourites:

1. Airport lounge access

One of our favourite benefits is access to airport lounges.

With the Platinum Card, you can access participating airport lounges, which can make travelling with children so much more comfortable.

Instead of waiting at the gate, you can have somewhere quieter to sit, get something to eat and drink, and generally make the airport experience a little more enjoyable.

And when you're travelling as a family, having somewhere comfortable to wait for your flight can be particularly valuable.

2. Travel insurance

The Platinum Card also includes travel insurance benefits.

This can provide valuable peace of mind when you're travelling with your family.

If you're considering the card primarily because of the insurance, make sure you check that the cover meets your family's needs.

3. Hotel and travel benefits

Another reason we like this Card is the range of benefits available through participating hotels and travel partners.

Depending on the current offers and programmes available, these can include things such as hotel upgrades, credits, complimentary breakfasts or other perks.

For us, these kinds of extras can really add up when you're travelling regularly.

4. Restaurant benefits and offers

There are also regular dining offers and credits available through American Express. For the last few years we have been getting a free meals every 6 months both at home and abroad.

Of course these offers change all the time so check the offers at the time of sign up.

5. Earn Membership Rewards points

Every time you use the card for eligible spending, you can earn Membership Rewards points.

This is one of the things I particularly like because the points aren't limited to just one airline or hotel programme. Depending on the options available, they can be used towards things such as:

  • Flights

  • Hotel stays

  • Upgrades

  • Shopping

  • Travel

The value you get from your points depends on how you choose to redeem them, so it's worth looking at the different redemption options rather than simply treating every point as having a fixed cash value.

6. Offers, cashback and discounts

American Express also regularly has Amex Offers, which can give you money off or additional rewards when you spend with participating retailers, hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

Is the American Express Platinum Card worth it?

For us, yes! Particularly because we travel frequently and make use of several of the benefits.

The Platinum Card has an annual fee, so you need to look at the benefits you're actually likely to use.

How many points can you get?

The welcome offer is one of the biggest reasons people consider applying for an American Express card.

At the time of writing, my referral offer is 100,000 Membership Rewards points, subject to the applicable eligibility and spending requirements.
