Things to do in Tijuana, Mexico with a baby
Yes, Tijuana is a dangerous place and it wouldn't be on the top 10 places to visit with a kid. However, if you go for a day trip and stick to the tourist area then you'll be ok. All the trouble is in the local neighbourhoods between gangs and there is no trouble in the tourist areas.
Here are the top things to do in Tijuana and how to get there:
1. Avenida Revolución
This is the main tourist street and where we mainly stayed! There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from with every Mexican dish you have been craving. It's also where most of the hotels are if you decide to spend a night.
2. Telefonica Gastro Park
If you want to walk a little bit outside the tourist street then a great place to go is Telefonica Gastro Park. It's a cute food park with several stands that sell tacos, margaritas as well as some international food. You can sit in the sun or under the umbrellas and relax. But beware the tacos take at least 30 min to be served and people say that the longer they take the better they taste!
3. Getting there
We walked from San Diego to Tijuana. We drove to the boarders and left our car in a car park on the US side which is a 5 min walk from the actual crossing. Getting in and out of Tijuana on foot is really quick and took us 5 min on the way there and about 25 min on the way back (US boarder control was stricter and more thorough). The walk once you cross the boarders and until you get to the tourist area is about 15 min and doesn't seem dangerous as it's always pretty busy. Many people actually live in Tijuana and commute to their jobs in San Diego every day!. The queues for cars crossing over though can go on for hours we've been told.
