If you're planning your baby's first holiday, you might be wondering how to make the actual flight as easy as possible.

We've travelled with our children from a young age, and I've found that a few simple preparations can make a big difference. Here are my 5 tips for flying short haul with a baby or toddler.

1. Fly during nap time time

If you can choose a flight around your baby's usual nap time, you increase your chances of them sleeping for at least part of the journey, which means a little bit of quiet time for you too.

Of course, babies don't always stick to their schedules when travelling, so don't worry if they decide that the plane is far too exciting for a nap. Even if they don't sleep, having their usual routine in mind can help make the journey feel a little easier.

If my baby/ toddler wants to sleep on me then I bring a soft blanket. If they have their own seat then I either bring an inflatable mattress for them or a hammock so they can stretch their legs and be more comfortable!

You can see a list of the best plane beds here.

2. Keep your baby well hydrated

The air inside an aeroplane can feel quite dry, so it's a good idea to make sure your baby has plenty of opportunities to drink during the journey.

Depending on their age and what they normally have, this could mean breastmilk, formula or water.

You don't need to force extra fluids, but offering drinks regularly can help keep them comfortable - particularly during take-off and landing, when swallowing can also help with the change in air pressure.

3. Pack your essentials in your hand luggage

For a short flight, you really don't need to take loads with you. Just make sure the things you'll actually need during those few hours are easy to reach.

Think about your baby's usual essentials - perhaps some snacks or milk, a few diapers, a small toy and a change of clothes.

Check your airline's cabin baggage allowance for infants before you fly, as this can vary between airlines.

4. Choose an aisle seat

If your baby/ toddler is at the stage where they want to move, explore and be entertained, an aisle seat can make life much easier.

Rather than having to ask the person next to you to move every time you need to get up, you can simply step into the aisle when you need to.

It's also handy if you need to walk up and down the plane with your little one for a few minutes.

5. Ask if there's a spare seat next to you

This is one of those little things that's always worth asking about at check-in!

If the flight isn't full, some airlines may be able to seat you next to an empty seat, although of course this can't be guaranteed.

If you're lucky enough to have one, it can make a huge difference. Having somewhere to put your baby's toys, changing bag or other essentials makes everything feel a little less cramped and your baby gets a bit more space too.

Final thoughts

Flying short haul with a baby doesn't have to be complicated. A little planning goes a long way, but you really don't need to bring your entire house with you!

Choose a flight time that works for your baby where possible, keep their essentials close by and try to relax and enjoy the journey. And remember, even if the flight doesn't go exactly to plan, it's only a few hours and you'll be there before you know it! ✈️❤️
